Boiler FAQs

Typical Boiler Problems

It might be low water levels, a broken diaphragm, Air locks, failure of motorized valves, or a problem with the thermostat.

A variety of issues could cause your boiler to leak water. It will depend on where the water is leaking from and how much water is being lost to determine the cause.

If you hear banging, whistling or gurgling noises, it could be that the air in your system is escaping. Alternatively, there may not be enough water pressure or it’s boiling. A pump failure could also be responsible for strange banging noises.

Could be a broken thermocouple, a draught blowing out the pilot light or a deposit built up in the pilot light.

The most common reason for a loss of water pressure is a leak in the pipes or system. The second most common reason is that the pressure relief valve needs replacement.

If you have a frozen condensate pipe, thawing it should be done by a qualified engineer.

If the thermostat is losing accuracy, turning the heating on/off when it shouldn’t be or otherwise malfunctioning, it may be time to replace it with a newer, more energy-efficient model.

Corroded pipe work can cause sludge to build up in the system, blocking the free flow of hot water to your radiators. Chemically cleaning or flushing the system will remove these deposits.

If your boiler keeps shutting off, you may have low water pressure, a problem with the thermostat, or a lack of water flow due to a closed valve, air in the system or the pump not circulating water properly.

Kettling is a term for the rumbling noise your boiler makes when lime scale builds up on its heat exchanger.
